Egging on Trade Justice in Milton Keynes

by Sophie Dodgeon and Judith Cavanagh

An unfair egg and spoon race was just one of the fun ways in which the serious message for trade justice was delivered to two MPs in Milton Keynes today.

About 30 people from local churches came together at Christ the Cornerstone Church in the city centre, where they heard a banana producer from Costa Rica describe how workers in his country lack many basic rights - such as the right to join trade unions.

Judith Cavanagh from Christian Aid went on to explain how unfair rules are keeping millions in poverty all around the world. In response Dr Phyllis Starkey MP said she welcomed the campaign and looked forward to working with the local group on this important issue.

The event culminated in a symbolic moment when images of scales were raised to illustrate the urgent need for trade rules to be weighted in favour of the poor and the environment.

'This was a fantastic event which delivered a strong message on trade justice to MPs,' said Judith Cavanagh.
